Question

Why is wood not preferred as a good fuel?

Solution

Wood possesses low calorific value (17 KJ/g). Its calorific value is particularly influenced by the moisture content in it. It produces lot of smoke during combustion and leaves an appreciable quantity of ash after burning. Moreover, use of wood leads to deforestation. Hence it is rarely used in industry as a fuel. It isused to some extent as a fuel more especially in domestic applications predominantly in ruralareas.
