Question

What will happen if the mica strips in an electric iron develop holes in them?

Solution

Since mica is a bad conductor of electricity, the strips protect the heating element from any leakage of electric current. If holes develop in the strips, the charged heating element may come in direct contact either with the sole plate or with the cover plate of the iron through theholes. It then poses serious risk of electric shock to the user of the electric iron.
