Question

What will be the effect of increase in temperature on the velocity of gas molecules kept in a closed container?

Solution

According to kinetic theory of gases, average kinetic energy of gas molecules is proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas. With increasing temperature, the pressure of a gas increases at constant volume. Again, the pressure of a gas increases as the number of collisions of the gas molecules with the walls of the container increases as a result of increase in kinetic energy or velocity of the gas molecules.
