Question

Value of universal gas constant (R) is same for all gases. What is its physical significance? work (or energy)

Solution

Dimension of R = work (or energy) /mole x K Hence, R = work (or energy) per Kelvin per mole of gas. Therefore, the value of R gives the measure of the work performed by 1 mol of an ideal gas when the temperature of the gas is raised by 1 K against a fixed pressure. This is the physical significance of R.
