Question

The maximum power a 20Ω resistor can dissipate as heat without being damaged is 2kW.Would you connect this resistor directly a 300V dc source of negligible internal resistance?

Solution

The rated voltage of the resistor is given by, V² = P x R = 2000 x 20 or, V = 200 V. Thus, it is not safe to connect the resistor directly across a 300 V source.
