Question
Let the mass and velocity of a molecule of a gas be m and v respectively. What will be the change in momentum of the molecule due to collision with the container?
Solution
rebounds with a velocity -v.
Initial momentum of the molecule = mv.
Final momentum after collision = – mv.
From conservation of momentum,
change in momentum = mv – (-mv) = 2mv.
Therefore, as a result of the collision, the wall of the container gets a momentum 2mv.
