Question

Explain the analogy between the flow of charge or current in a conductor under a potential difference with the free fall of a body under gravity.

Solution

When a body falls freely under gravity, it falls from a higher level (away from earth) to a lower level (nearer to earth) i.e.., from a higher gravitational potential to a lower gravitational potential position. In a similar way, when two charged conductors are joined by a metallic conductor, electrons flow from the conductor at low potential to the conductor at high potential and current is said to flow from the conductor at high potential to the conductor at low potential. Thus, the directionofflowof current is takenasreverseto that of the electrons.
